Hello Fellow FixeRs

If you’re like me, you’re probably always thinking about ways to improve your old home. Start here and get on the mailing list to get my top tips for renovations and old home repair.

Our Story

In 2019, my husband Malcolm and I purchased a three-story semi-detached house in the city that we love. It had always been my dream to renovate an old century home and this certainly fit the bill: built in 1910, the house was in need of major upgrades, showing no signs of renovation since the 1970s.

We started the work as soon as we took possession of the house, beginning with the kitchen. I left my job as an energy efficiency specialist so I would be able to work on the house full time, and I accepted the challenge with gusto, excited for the privilege of being able to follow a lifelong goal.

With no room in the budget to rent a separate place, we decided to live in the house while we renovated, working room by room until it was completed. We were used to roughing it on camping trips, and with no kids at the time (that would come later), we thought, ‘how hard could it be?’

It was hard. And it was dusty. And it took much longer than we anticipated. But with every day, I felt my skillsets growing. I honed a knowledge of tools and carpentry, plumbing and electrical, drywall, paint and decor. The physics behind my Building Science degree was being put to the test as I insulated walls and added vapor barrier. While there were certainly difficulties, I now look back on the process fondly with a wealth of knowledge gathered along the way.

This is knowledge I now wish to share with others, especially other women looking to complete their own renos and home improvement projects. Whether the goal is basic home repairs or large-scale renovations, my hope is that even the most novice DIYer will feel empowered with the belief that they can do it too.

Confidence in yourself and a willingness to learn; those are the tools that build the foundation for a successful DIYer. I want to help guide you on your journey so you can find success right under your own roof!
